This week in the UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid continued their tradition of not winning in Lyon's Stade de Gerland. For the seventh consecutive game played at Lyon's home, Real Madrid failed to win, this time due to a late equalizer by Lyon. The game started off with neither side dominating much, and the first half ended 0-0. Less than a minute after former Lyon star Karim Benzema was given a standing ovation from Lyon fans and welcomed onto the pitch, he struck the tiebreaker and gave Real Madrid the lead. In the final minutes, however, Lyon striker Bafétimbi Gomis scored the equalizer breaking Real Madrid's hopes of leading before the 2nd leg. The next leg will be played on March 16th at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
Other results from the champions league include AC Milan's loss to Tottenham, Inter Milan's loss to Bayern Munich, Manchester United's draw against Marseille, and Chelsea's win against FC Copenhagen.
Real Madrid find themselves 7 points behind Barcelona again after a 0-0 draw against Deportivo this weekend in La Liga. Deportivo played a defensive game, and Real Madrid paid the price by hitting the post twice, but not the back of the net. Barcelona beat Mallorca 3-0 thanks to strikes by Messi, Villa, and Pedro.
Manchester United faced Wigan Athletic today, which resulted in a 4-0 thrashing thanks to a Hernandez double, a Rooney goal, and a late Fabio goal.
