Barclay's Premier League
Chelsea continued their sub-par form as they bowed down to West Bromwich for the first time since 1979. The game took place at The Hawthorns, West Bromwich's home stadium, with Philip Dowd reffing the game. The 50 million pound man, Fernando Torres, started the game on the bench, only coming on in the 76th minute for Michael Essien. The game was scoreless until the 82nd minute, when Liam Ridgewell assisted Gareth McAuley's goal. This proved to be the winner, hurting Chelsea's chances for a top 4 finish in the league. The loss also put much pressure on Andre Villas-Boas, the Chelsea manager, who has only led his side to 3 wins in the past 12 league games. Chelsea's next match is on March 6th for the FA cup, where they will face Birmingham City F.C.
Arsenal faced Liverpool, currently ranked 7th in the Premier League, in a match that ultimately brought Arsenal 3 points ahead of Chelsea. The highly anticipated match began in an interesting manner, with Dirk Kuyt missing a penalty kick in the 19th minute, only for Arsenal to concede four minutes later through an own goal by Laurent Koscielny. In the 31st minute, star striker Robin Van Persie equalized for the gunners by scoring his first shot on goal, a header assisted by Sagna. The scoreline remained 1-1 until the 92nd minute, when Van Persie scored his second shot on goal with a magnificent volley that can be seen below.
