In a clash between the first and last place team in the league, Manchester United, to the surprise of everybody, lost 2-1 to Wolverhampton Wolves. Manchester United had previously been undefeated in the league, and it seemed as though they would cruise their way past their competitors as Nani scored on the 3 minute mark. Wolverhampton, however, fought back and scored in the 10th and 40th minutes, and defended for the remainder of the game. After scoring twice against Aston Villa last week, Rooney seemed to be back in action for the Red Devils. This game proved otherwise though, as Rooney played a rather low key game.
In the Spanish League, Barcelona dominated Atletico Madrid ending the game 3-0 thanks to a Lionel Messi hat trick. The three goals puts Messi ahead of Ronaldo by one goal in the League's top scorers list as Messi has 24 against Ronaldo's 23. Lionel Messi has had an outstanding season so far, scoring 40 goals in 33 appearances for Barcelona! Osasuna only managed a draw against Mallorca after shocking Real Madrid last week in a 1-0 thriller. Osasuna were without Iranian stars Nekounam and Shojaei (Masoud), as well as defender Monreal. Real Madrid are scheduled to play Real Soceidad tomorrow evening to pull back 7 points behind Barcelona.
Former Manchester United and current Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo turned 26 years old today, and stated that the best gift would be for Madrid to win the Champions League this season. Ronaldo has been the only signing of Florentino Perez's "New Galacticos" to appear worth his cost. Madrid paid Manchester United $130,000,000 for Cristiano Ronaldo, and he has not disappointed. By the end of 2010, in one and a half seasons for Real Madrid, Ronaldo had scored 65 goals in 65 games, averaging a goal per game. Ronaldo was dubbed FIFA World Player of the Year in 2008 after a season with Manchester United in which he scored 42 goals in all competitions, and is looking to regain that title this year. Should Ronaldo keep up the rate at which he is scoring in La Liga, he will break the record held by Hugo Sanchez for most goals in one season (37).
This winning goal in the Champions League semi final is regarded as Ronaldo's greatest goal ever.
