URUGUAY WIN COPA AMERICA 3-0 AGAINST PARAGUAY
Uruguay
Last Copa America, Uruguay's hopes were crushed in the semi-finals when Brazil, who later won the tournament, beat them in a penalty shootout. Since then, however, Uruguay has emerged once again as a major power in international football. Uruguay was the winner of the inaugural World Cup in 1930, and won the tournament a second time in 1950. Although Uruguay won a few Copa Americas since then, their performances have been inconsistent on the world stage. In recent history though, with great players such as Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez, Uruguay has managed to finish 4th place in the 2010 world cup, and win the 2011 Copa America. This is Uruguay's first international trophy since the 1995 Copa America, when Uruguay defeated Brazil in penalty kicks.Diego Forlan
Diego Forlan won the Golden Ball at last year's World Cup, showing that he is the type of player to rise up to the occasion and bring his team glory no matter what the circumstances are. The 2010-2011 season at Atletico Madrid was quite frustrating for Forlan as there was immense pressure on him. Going into the Copa America, Forlan had finished his worst season in years, and had not scored for Uruguay since the 3rd place playoff match against Germany in the 2010 World Cup. Despite these setbacks, Forlan worked hard every game for Uruguay, and eventually found the back of the net. It is said that what makes a player great is how he performs in the big games. If this be the case, Forlan is truly great. Forlan broke his goal drought in the final of the Copa America against Paraguay, scoring 2 goals en route to a 3-0 victory for Uruguay.
